Mystery Monday: Hablo

Every Monday we will post an entry that hasn’t yet been published with a view towards harnessing the collective onomastic power of the internet. If you have any thoughts about the name’s origin, other variants it might be related to, other examples of its use, etc., please share them in the comments! If you wish to browse other Mystery Monday names, there is an index.

Today’s mystery name is another name from Moravia: Any Czech scholars have any thoughts?

A Czech /h/ often comes from an original */g/, so I am looking for explanations of *Gablo as an origin of Hablo. It looks like a short form of Gabriel to me, since I don’t know of any Slavonic names in gab-/hab-.

  2. Milosz

I’d say “Havlo”, which would be “Havel” (as used today), which = Gall (as in St. Gall). Other try would be “Abel” (Habelo)? This is fun 🙂

  3. Hablo is the Spanish word for talk! 🙂
