Mystery Monday: Ouguie

Sometimes, you come across a name where you wonder if it is simply just a typo — either by the editor or by the original scribe. But sometimes the name is so far from anything you’ve seen that you can’t even imagine what it might be a typo for. In that spirit, we present today’s Mystery Name.Ouguie

  1. Very wild guesses, but could they be anything to do with Germanic names beginning with Hugo- or Hyge-? Or the Greek deity Hygia?

    In 2009 there seems to have been a woman named Emmanuelle Ouguier playing for France on the World Women Polo Circuit. Dauzat, dictionnaire étymologique des noms et prénoms s.n. Auger (from Gmc. Adal-gari) notes a southern form Auguier. He also has an entry for Ougier, which he says is a regional variant of Auger or Oger (from Gmc. Od-gari). It’s grasping at straws a bit, but I wonder whether Ouguié could be a regional feminized variant of one of these masculine names.
