Today’s name is a feminine one from late 16th C Normandy (Protestant context, if that makes any difference). It’s one where we can easily come up with various guesses about its origins, but that’s all they are — guesses.
- Guess one: It is related to French jeu ‘game’ and fin(e) ‘fine, nice’ or fin(e) ‘final’. Problem: Very atypical type of construction (unless the phrase was some sort of phrase in common parlance at the time that we are not familiar with); fine is fem. but jeu is masculine (but perhaps this is simply because the name was borne by a woman!)
- Guess two: The editor misread an s for an f and the name is Jeusine; possibly then it is related to the English Josine we have from 1549. (An attempt to feminise Joseph? Or Josiah?)

Pour ce nom, il est nécessaire de pouvoir consulter les registres manuscrits de Caen avant de se prononcer définitivement. “Jeufine” a en effet donné naissance à quatre enfants, et l’éditeur a indiqué à chaque fois une graphie différente. “Jeufine” est l’épouse d’Henry Le Febvre (ou Le Fèvre) : elle est nommée Teussine en 1564 (p. 47) ou Truffine (note 1), Gieffine en 1565 (p. 136), Jeufine en 1566 (p. 229) et Gyeuffine en 1568 (p. 391).
Comme on trouve de nombreux Tassin dans le répertoire masculin de Caen ainsi qu’une Tassine (1564, p. 86 et 1567, p. 320), il est probable que notre Jeufine est plutôt une Tassine ou Teussine.

In support of this possibility I note that Journal de Gilles de Gouberville pour les années 1549, 1550, 1551, 1552 publié d’après le manuscrit original découvert dans le chartrier de Saint-Pierre-Église, Caen, 1895, mentions ma seur Tassine 1543 (pp. 17, 32); she is further identified in a footnote as Tassine Picot. On p. 194 we find a Tassine, daughter of Jehan Le Febvre 1551. A footnote on p. 230 says that one of Gilles’s three acknowledged natural daughters was named Tassine, and a Tassine Quentin 1552 is mentioned on p. 240 (and 241, 265, 293). On p. 316 we find a Tassine d’Orglandes 1479. In short, there’s no lack of evidence for a feminine name Tassine in the right place at the right time.
Incidentally, in Article VI of Le Ménagier de Paris, from 1393, we find Tassin disoit à dame Tassine; in principle this could be a man’s surname and the feminized surname of his wife, but since it appears in a group with the pairs Robin & Marie and Jehan & Agneso., this seems unlikely, and it appears that we have an earlier example of the name.
Du point de vue étymologique, Tassin est hypocoristique du nom Eustace. Lorsque l’on trouve des formes féminisées de noms masculins en France du Nord du 14e au 16e siècle, il est vraisemblable que la fille a reçu une forme féminisée du nom de son parrain. Dans certaines régions, à la même époque (ainsi en Bretagne occidentale, pays bretonnant), on ne trouve aucun nom masculin féminisé, ce qui suppose que les noms des filles étaient donnés par les marraines.
My personal guess would be a feminine form of Geoffrey “Gottfried”. It would help to have genealogical data to confirm this guess (she should be the daughter or granddaughter of a Geoffrey)
C’est une possibilité que j’avais également envisagé. Il y a plusieurs pères dans les registres protestants de Caen (1560-1572) qui se prénomment Geffroy, Gieffroy ou Jeffroy. Parmi les parrains, nous avons 18 Gieffroy, 1 Giffroy, 1 Geffroy et 2 Jeffroy. La forme féminine la plus courante de ce nom est Geffrette mais on n’en trouve aucune à Caen. Il n’y a par ailleurs aucune femme à porter un dérivé du nom Geffroy avec un /r/ après le radical /Geff/ ou /Jeff/.
